About Cyndi Lauper:

Cynthia Ann Stephanie “Cyndi” Lauper (born June 22, 1953) is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and LGBT rights activist whose career has spanned over four decades. Her debut solo album She’s So Unusual (1983) was an instant commercial success. The album was the first debut female album to chart four top-five hits on the Billboard Hot 100—”Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” “Time After Time,” “She Bop,” and “All Through the Night,” earning Lauper the Best New Artist award at the 27th Grammy Awards in 1985. Her success continued with her second record, True Colors (1986), which included the number one hit of the same name, and “Change of Heart,” which peaked at number 3 and earned Lauper two nominations at the 29th Grammy Awards in 1987.

Cyndi Lauper was raised in Ozone Park, Queens, in New York City. Her family is Roman Catholic. Her father was of German and Swiss descent, and her mother is Italian American (from Sicily). She has an older sister, Ellen, and a younger brother, Fred (nicknamed Butch). Lauper’s parents divorced when she was five years old. Her mother subsequently remarried and divorced again.

As a child, Lauper listened to artists including Judy Garland, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and The Beatles. At age twelve, she began writing her own songs and playing an acoustic guitar given to her by her sister. Even when she was young, Lauper expressed herself by dyeing her hair different colors and wearing radical fashions.

Cyndi Lauper was accepted in a special public high school for students with talent in the visual arts, but eventually dropped out, and later earned her GED. At the age of seventeen, she left home, planning to study art. Her journey took her to Canada, where she spent two weeks in the woods with her dog Sparkle, trying to find herself. She eventually wound up in Vermont, where she took art classes at Johnson State College and supported herself by working odd jobs.

In the early-1970s, Lauper performed as a vocalist with various cover bands in the New York metropolitan area (such as Doc West and Flyer), singing hits by bands including Jefferson Airplane, Led Zeppelin, and Bad Company. Although Cyndi was performing on stage, she was not happy singing cover songs. In 1977, Cyndi Lauper damaged her vocal cords and took a year off. She was told by three doctors that she would never sing again, but regained her voice with the help of vocal coach Katie Agresta.

lyrics:

You with the sad eyes
Don’t be discouraged
Oh I realize
Its hard to take courage
In a world full of people
You can lose sight of it all
And the darkness inside you
Can make you feel so small

But I see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that’s why I love you
So don’t be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors are beautiful,
Like a rainbow

Show me a smile then,
Don’t be unhappy, can’t remember
When I last saw you laughing
If this world makes you crazy
And you’ve taken all you can bear
You call me up
Because you know I’ll be there

And I’ll see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that’s why I love you
So don’t be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors are beautiful,
Like a rainbow

(When I last saw you laughing)
If this world makes you crazy
And you’ve taken all you can bear
You call me up
Because you know I’ll be there

And I’ll see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that’s why I love you
So don’t be afraid to let them show

Your true colors
True colors
True colors
Shining through

I see your true colors
And that’s why I love you
So don’t be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors are beautiful,
Like a rainbow

lyrics:

I come home in the morning light
My mother says when you gonna live your life right
Oh mother dear we’re not the fortunate ones
And girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun

The phone rings in the middle of the night
My father yells what you gonna do with your life
Oh daddy dear you know you’re still number one
But girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have

That’s all they really want
Some fun
When the working day is done
Girls – they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun

Some boys take a beautiful girl
And hide her away from the rest of the world
I want to be the one to walk in the sun
Oh girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have

That’s all they really want
Some fun
When the working day is done
Girls – they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun,
They want to have fun,
They want to have fun…

About Crowded House:

Crowded House are a pop rock band formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1985. Founding members are New Zealander Neil Finn (vocalist, guitarist, primary songwriter), and Australians Paul Hester (drums) and Nick Seymour (bass). Later band members included Neil’s brother, Tim Finn, and Americans Mark Hart and Matt Sherrod. Neil Finn (vocals, guitar, piano) and drummer Paul Hester (ex-The Cheks, Deckchairs Overboard) were former members of New Zealand band Split Enz, which spent part of 1975–6 in Australia and several years in England. Neil is the younger brother of Split Enz founding member Tim Finn, who joined Crowded House in 1990 on vocals, guitars and keyboards for the album Woodface. Bassist Nick Seymour (ex-Plays with Marionettes, Bang, The Horla) is the younger brother of singer-songwriter and guitarist Mark Seymour of the now defunct Australian rock group Hunters & Collectors.

The single, “Don’t Dream It’s Over“, was released in December 1986 and reached number one on the New Zealand Singles Chart and number eight in Australia. It was also a big international hit, reaching number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number one in Canada. It remains the group’s most commercially successful song. In March 1987, the group were awarded ‘Best New Talent’, along with ‘Song of the Year’ and ‘Best Video’ for “Don’t Dream It’s Over“, at the inaugural ARIA Music Awards. The video also earned the group the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist that year. “Don’t Dream It’s Over” has often been covered by other artists and gave Paul Young a hit single in 1991. It was also used for a New Zealand Tourism Board advertisement in its 100% Pure New Zealand worldwide promotion from October 2005. In May 2001, “Don’t Dream it’s Over” was voted 7th in a poll of the Best Australian Songs of Alltime by the Australasian Performing Rights Association.

lyrics:

There is freedom within
there is freedom without
Try to catch a deluge in a paper cup
There’s a battle ahead
many battles are lost
But you’ll never see the end of the road
While you’re traveling with me

[CHORUS] Hey now, hey now
Don’t dream it’s over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won’t win

Now I’m towing my car
there’s a hole in the roof
my possessions are causing me suspicion but there’s no proof
in the paper today
tales of war and of waste
but you turn right over to the T.V. page

[CHORUS] Hey now, hey now
Don’t dream it’s over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won’t win

Now I’m walking again
to the beat of a drum
And I’m counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead
barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and relief

Hey now, Hey now
Don’t dream it’s over
Hey now, Hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
You know they won’t win

Don’t let them win
Hey now, Hey now

Hey now, Hey now

Hey now, Hey now
Don’t let them win

They come, They come
Don’t let them win

Hey now, Hey now (yeah)

Hey now, Hey now

lyrics:

You, who are on the road must have a code that you can live by.
And so become yourself because the past is just a good bye.
Teach your children well, their father’s hell did slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams, the one they fix, the one you’ll know by.
Don’t you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

And you, of the tender years can’t know the fears that your elders grew by,
And so please help them with your youth, they seek the truth before they can die.
Teach your parents well, their children’s hell will slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams, the one they fix,the one you’ll know by.
Don’t you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

lyrics:

Early in the evenin’ just about supper time
Over by the courthouse they’re starting to unwind
Four kids on the corner trying to bring you up
Willy picks a tune out and he blows it on the harp

[Chorus:] Down on the corner, out in the street
Willy and the Poorboys are playin’
Bring a nickel; tap your feet

Rooster hits the washboard and people just got to smile
Blinky, thumps the gut bass and solos for a while
Poorboy twangs the rhythm out on his kalamazoo
Willy goes into a dance and doubles on kazoo

[Chorus] [Chorus]

You don’t need a penny just to hang around
But if you’ve got a nickel, won’t you lay your money down?
Over on the corner there’s a happy noise
People come from all around to watch the magic boy

[Chorus] [Chorus] [Chorus]

About Creedence Clearwater Revival:

Creedence Clearwater Revival — sometimes shortened to Creedence or CCR — was an American rock band popular in the late 1960s and early ’70s. The band consisted of lead vocalist, lead guitarist, and primary songwriter John Fogerty, rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty (John’s brother), bassist Stu Cook, and drummer Doug Clifford. Their musical style encompassed the roots rock and swamp rock genres. Despite their San Francisco Bay Area origins, they portrayed a Southern rock style, singing about bayous, catfish, the Mississippi River, and other popular elements of Southern iconography.

Creedence Clearwater Revival‘s music is still a staple of American and worldwide radio airplay; the band has sold 26 million albums in the United States alone. Creedence Clearwater Revival was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. Rolling Stone ranked the band eighty-second on its list of the 100 greatest artists of all time. Their musical influence can be heard in many genres including southern rock, grunge, roots rock, and blues.

CCR continued to tour incessantly with performances at the Atlanta Pop Festival and Woodstock. Their set was not included in the Woodstock film or soundtrack because John Fogerty felt the band’s performance was subpar. (Several tracks from the event were eventually included in the 1994 commemorative box set.) Stu Cook, however, held an opposings view, saying “The performances are classic Creedence Clearwater Revival and I’m still amazed by the number of people who don’t even know we were one of the headliners at Woodstock ’69.” After Woodstock, CCR was busy honing material for a fourth album, Willy and the Poor Boys, released in November 1969. “Down on the Corner” and “Fortunate Son” climbed to No. 3 and No. 14, respectively, by year’s end.

Creed – Higher

About Creed:

Creed is an American rock band, formed in 1993 in Tallahassee, Florida. The band consists of lead vocalist Scott Stapp, guitarist and vocalist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall, and drummer Scott Phillips. Creed released two studio albums, My Own Prison in 1997 and Human Clay in 1999, before Marshall left the band in 2000 to be replaced by touring bassist Brett Hestla. The band’s third record, Weathered, was released in 2001 with Mark Tremonti handling bass before the band disbanded in 2004 due to increasing tension between members. Tremonti, Marshall, and Phillips went on to found Alter Bridge while Stapp followed a solo career. After years of speculation, Creed reunited in 2009 for a tour and new album called Full Circle, and in early 2012 the band reconvened to tour and start work on a fifth album.

Becoming popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the band released three consecutive multi-platinum albums, one of which has been certified diamond and has sold over 28 million records in the United States, and over 40 million albums worldwide, becoming the ninth best-selling artist of the 2000s. Creed is often recognized as one of the prominent acts of the post-grunge movement of the late 1990s and early 2000s and is one of the most commercially successful rock bands of all time. Billboard ranked Creed as the 18th best artist of the 2000s.

Although many of their songs contain allusions to Christian theology, and the members of the band are all Christians, they have stated that they do not consider Creed to be a Christian band. Creed is sometimes labeled a Christian rock band due to the fact that their first three albums focus on questions of faith, Christianity, and eternity. The band was never signed to a contemporary Christian music label, nor did it perform in Christian music venues or get any widespread regular play on Christian radio. However, the band’s name itself refers to the religious concept of a creed. Also, themes within their musical titles such as “My Own Prison,” “Higher,” “My Sacrifice,” “What’s This Life For,” “With Arms Wide Open,” and “One Last Breath” all contain allusions to Christian theology. Band members have stated that while the members may be Christians, they do not see span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>Creed as a Christian band. Bassist Brian Marshall, who named the band, said that singer Scott Stapp uses spiritual imagery as a metaphor.

Creed worked on their third album for most of 2001, with Tremonti choosing to play bass on the record himself instead of Hestla to “[preserve] the band’s initial core,” although Hestla remained in Creed‘s touring lineup. Weathered was released on November 20, 2001. Six singles were released from the album: “My Sacrifice” (which earned the band a nomination for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 2003), “One Last Breath, “Hide”, “Don’t Stop Dancing“, “Weathered” and “Bullets.” The album was a commercial bestseller and was certified platinum six times over and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200. It remained at that spot for eight weeks, a record which Creed notably shares with The Beatles. The tour to promote Weathered was met with considerable controversy; it was delayed in April 2002 when Stapp suffered a concussion and vertebrae damage after being involved in a car accident.

lyrics:

When dreaming I’m guided to another world
Time and time again
At sunrise I fight to stay asleep
‘Cause I don’t want to leave the comfort of this place
‘Cause there’s a hunger, a longing to escape
From the life I live when I’m awake
So let’s go there
Let’s make our escape
Come on, let’s go there
Let’s ask can we stay?

Can you take me Higher?
To a place where blind men see
Can you take me Higher?
To a place with golden streets

Although I would like our world to change
It helps me to appreciate
Those nights and those dreams
But, my friend, I’d sacrifice all those nights
If I could make the Earth and my dreams the same
The only difference is
To let love replace all our hate
So let’s go there
Let’s make our escape
Come on, let’s go there
Let’s ask can we stay?

Can you take me Higher?
To a place where blind men see
Can you take me Higher?
To a place with golden streets

So lets go there, lets go there,
Come on, lets go there
Lets ask can we stay?

Up high I feel like I’m alive for the very first time
Set up high I’m strong enough to take these dreams
And make them mine
Set up high I’m strong enough to take these dreams
And make them mine

Can you take me Higher?
To a place where blind men see
Can you take me Higher?
To a place with golden streets

Can you take me Higher?
To a place where blind men see
Can you take me Higher?
To a place with golden streets

There’s nothing here to run from,
Cos yeah, everybody here’s got somebody to lean on

About Coldplay:

Coldplay is a British rock band that formed in 1996 by lead vocalist Chris Martin and lead guitarist Jonny Buckland at University College London. After they formed under the name Pectoralz, Guy Berryman joined the group as a bassist and they changed their name to Starfish. Will Champion joined as a drummer, backing vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist, completing the line-up. Manager Phil Harvey is often considered an unofficial fifth member. The band renamed themselves “Coldplay” in 1998, before recording and releasing three EPs; Safety in 1998, Brothers & Sisters as a single in 1999 and The Blue Room in the same year. The latter was their first release on a major label, after signing to Parlophone.

Despite their worldwide popularity, the band has remained protective of how their music is used in the media, refusing its use for product endorsements. In the past, Coldplay turned down multi-million dollar contracts from Gatorade, Diet Coke, and Gap, who wanted to use the songs “Yellow”, “Trouble”, and “Don’t Panic” respectively. According to frontman, Chris Martin, “We wouldn’t be able to live with ourselves if we sold the songs’ meanings like that.”

Coldplay spent most of 2004 out of the spotlight, taking a break from touring and releasing a satire music video of a song from a fictional band titled The Nappies while recording their third album. X&Y was released in June 2005 in UK and Europe. This new, delayed release date had put the album back into the next fiscal year, actually causing EMI’s stock to drop. It became the best-selling album of 2005 with worldwide sales of 8.3 million. The lead single, “Speed of Sound“, made its radio and online music store debut on 18 April and was released as a CD on 23 May 2005. X&Y entered the album charts of 20 countries at the number one position and was the third-fastest selling album in UK chart history.

Cloudkicker – Everything’s Mirrors

About the Author:

Ben Sharp has been making music under the banner of Cloudkicker since 2007. He writes, records, mixes, and masters everything at his home in Columbus, Ohio. Few get as lucky as Ben Sharp has. Sharp, who has a day job, the details of which he has never made public, tells us that his prog metal project Cloudkicker, has found ample inspiration in his work. “A big part of what I do for a living is travel. I like movement. I like going from place to place. I like the idea of a journey. I think that comes through in my music,” says the Ohio-based multi-instrumentalist over Skype. It all started in 2008, with Cloudkicker’s first album, The Discovery. Says Sharp, “I’d gotten a lot of emails from people asking me ways they could donate, ways they could give me money. I would always say, ‘No, it’s okay, don’t worry about it. It’s something I do as a hobby’.” After 2010’s Beacons, Ben Sharp realized his music was widely-heard and purchased across the world, using the popular pay-what-you-want model of sales. With his latest release, Subsume, which was out last month, Sharp says he likes the balance between Cloudkicker and his regular life to stay the same as it’s been over the last five years and five albums. Says Sharp, “If Subsume has taught me anything, it’s not to stress out about music and not to worry.”

Ben Sharp does everything himself when it comes to Cloudkicker. Everything from the guitar tone that he comes up with to the time and effort to the song construction, mixing and mastering. Ben Sharp likes getting things to sound as close to the way it sounds in his head. He certainly feels very strongly that production should not necessarily be polished, but reflect the way that’s balanced. But for bands that he listens to, and people who send me music, he’s not nearly as critical of the production of their music as he is of his own. Ben Sharp is a very down to earth guy, not feeling the need to get paid for his work as he does it as a hobby, but takes donations to help fund new equipment and production costs.

Some Songs by Cloudkicker:

The album Beacons was released 16 September 2010 including songs: “Push it way up” and “Segue”. Everything’s Mirrors by Cloudkicker was released 15 July 2008. The album Discovery released in 2008 included the song: “States“.
